Path of Exile Gems Guide
Gems are indispensable if you’re trying to raise the stats of your gear. While they might not be as important as jewels, gems hold a special place in Path of Exile are among the keys to making great character builds. If you’re at a loss about which gems to get and what they are generally, we’ve got you covered. We’ll be taking you through the importance of these tiny, shiny stones and why you should invest in getting the best of the best of them. On top of it all, you don’t need to spend all that much PoE Orbs and PoE Currency either!
What Are Gems?
Skill Gems are items that can be equipped in item sockets in order to add extra passives, attack, defense, and more. There are two types of skill gems: active skill gems and support skill gems. Active skill gems give you skills that you can actually use in the game; you can also augment them even further by linking them with support skill gems. On the other hand, support skill gems do not give you active skills. Instead, they simply modify any active skill gems that you have in your item sockets. Support gems level up and are color-coded; they also have level and attribute requirements just like skill gems do. Don’t worry too much about matching the color of your support skill gem to your active skill gem though, as the color doesn’t matter and any support skill gem can affect an active skill gem, regardless of color.
The Difference between Jewels and Gems
Beginners often forget that jewels and gems aren’t the same. Jewels are much different compared to gems. Gems go into gear and items only, while jewels go into the dedicated jewel sockets in the passive skill tree. That’s basically all there is to it. While they do both give certain buffs and abilities to your character, jewels are much harder to level up as they can only be modified by using orbs. Both, however, can be removed or replaced from your gear or passive skill tree at no cost.
How Do I Acquire Gems?
Gems aren’t hard to come by at all and are actually quite accessible, even to starting players. They’re often dropped by monsters or given out as quest rewards. You can also find them being sold by the vendors in quest hubs. So don’t worry about not having enough skill gems, since you can easily purchase your fill from your local shop if you don’t have the time or patience to farm them off of monsters. For certain skill gems likeVaal Skill Gems; you can obtain them by going to the Vaal Vessel in corrupted areas. Alternatively, you can also try to corrupt a regular skill gem.
Requirements When Using Gems
There are three requirements that you must meet in order to use a gem. One is that you must place the gem in a socket that’s of the same color. While active and support skill gems don’t need to be color-coded when combined, this is not the case when putting an active skill gem in the socket itself. Second, your level must the same or more as your gem’s level. And lastly, most gems have attribute levels that you will need to meet. The three colors—red, green and blue, are aligned with these attributes. Red is for Strength, Green is for Dexterity, and Blue is for Intelligence. Be sure to always check to see if you’ve met the requirements of the gems that you’re about to insert in a socket, or else the item that you’ve inserted the gem in will be disabled.
And that’s all you need to know about all things gems! Path of Exile’s skill system is one that is powerful and intricate, yet flexible at the same time. There’s a ton of gems to collect, with over 238 unique active skill gems and 119 support skill gems—that’s totaling to 357! Luckily, you don’t need to spend that much PoE Currency and PoE Orbs since they’re not that expensive. Experiment to your heart’s content and find the right combination of gems that fits your playstyle.
