How To Fix Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Errors, FOV, Crashes, Performance Issues

9

Senua is a Celtic warrior that embarks on a haunting vision quest to the homeland of the Northmen into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover.  The game comes from the makers of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and DmC: Devil May Cry.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has, now, over 1,000 Very Positive reviews on Steam, meaning that the game is actually cool, despite what players were saying about being more like a movie than a game. Although, the positive reviews, players still reported that they are encountering some errors and bugs that are making their gaming experience not so pleasant.

Some of the Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice errors that players reported on the Steam Dashboard are:

  • Low FOV Issue
  • Performance Issues like Freezes and Low FPS
  • Black Screen
  • Random crashes or Startup crashes
  • Mouse control bug
  • Save game progression issue

If you are encountering one of the issues above, you’ve come to the right place because forwards you will find our guide that will help you fix them. First, we need to make sure that you meet the minimum system requirements of the game, just check them below.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Errors:

Great! Your PC can run the game fine, that means your issues are generated by the game. Below, you will find the most common errors and bugs in the game and for each issue, you will find a solution or workaround on how to fix it.

Don’t forget that if you don’t know how to apply a workaround or if you have any questions related to the game, you can comment below or send us a Support ticket, and our team will help you fix your game.

#1 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice FOV Issue

There is an issue with the Field of View in the game, apparently, the camera is too close to the character. Some players are saying that this is the most natural looking and it’s the way the game was designed to be played by the creators. But for some, it’s just annoying to play it this way.

Anyways, if you want your camera to be a little far from your character, we come up with a workaround on how to change that, see it below.

Workaround:

Go to LOCALAPPDATA\HellbladeGame\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor.

Here you will find a file called Engine.ini, open it and paste in the following code line:

[/script/engine.localplayer]
AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainYFOV

#2 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Crashes – Fatal Error

It seems that there are multiple instances in which the game crashes, for example, some players reported that when they start the game and get to the Mental Health Disclaimer, they encounter a Fatal Error and the game crashes. For others, the game crashes randomly while playing on when they die.

Some players on the Steam forum gave the following solutions that helped them solve the crashes:

Crashes Solutions:

  • Reinstall the game and change graphics settings to low and back to medium/high.
  • Verify the integrity cache of your game.
  • Make sure that you installed the latest driver for your GPU.
  • If your game keeps crashing, check the guide at the end of our post to fix them.

#3 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Progression Issue

As you can see in the tweet above the game has a glitch in which you can’t progress further. The guys from PC Invasion gave out some solutions for this issue, check out their semi-guide below.

In Hellblade there is a permadeath mechanic that’s triggered when the rot reaches the head of the protagonist. Players get an idea of how affected they are by the rot moving up the arm of the character. If a player dies too often it’s back to the start for another attempt.

That is of course not a bug but some Steam users have been reporting an issue where they get stuck from progressing. It appears the only way to progress is to load a previous save and hope that it’s fixed. The video below demonstrates the issue which may be appearing in different places.

It’s worth noting that if the rot reaches the head, saves get deleted and it’s time to start over so it might be a good idea to find the saves on your hard drive and back them up in case.  The bug will likely be fixed sharpish if it’s becoming a real problem. Just be aware it exists and watch out for an update from Ninja Theory.

#3 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Performance Issues

Players are complaining about performance issues like low fps, freezes and even fps drops. Some of them can’t get rid of the low frame rates and some encounter them only when they change some areas.

A user on the Steam forum analyzed the game graphic settings to see the frame rates impact. You can check them below. You can play with the settings below and find your best optimization for your PC and you can also apply or workarounds for a better optimization.

Frame-rates analysis:
Standing at the edge of the water near the first runestone just as you land on shores:
On 4K, LOW Quality setting (LOW all) I’m at 89-90fps.

4K + Vsync Off for measurements
Raising from Low to Very High- individual fps costs:
Water: 1 fps loss
Post Processing: 16 fps ! From 90 to 74 !
Shadows: 2-3 fps
Textures: 3-4 fps
Distance: 2 fps
View Effects: 11-12 fps ! From 90 to 78!

*Post Processing adds blur and Film Grain but it also adds Ambient Occlusion and improves lighting and shadows. Without it, shadows attend foliage, objects and on Senua’s body and clothing appear flat and unimpressive.
*Effects makes water have ripples and reflections it seems.
Both seem essential but cost way too much for what they actually do.

Workarounds to optimize your fps:

In gameusersettings.ini change to
sg.AntiAliasingQuality=0

In scaleability.ini add
[AntiAliasingQuality@0]
r.PostProcessAAQuality=0

If you want to get rid of the motion blur and color fringing add

[PostProcessQuality@3]
r.MotionBlurQuality=0
r.SceneColorFringeQuality=0

In scaleability.ini (the @3 is the quality setting you have it set to in gameusersettings.ini, 3 is the very high ingame setting).

    Is there a way to turn off the film grain? I have a good rig and have no problems running max settings. I just hate the film grain and motion blur in games and turn it off as soon as possible, but I cant find a way to disable them.

      Have you fix it? I’m having the same issue!

      • Corthloy

        Yes, I restarted my PC and then changed the resolution of the game using the GeForce Experience. Now it runs very well (28-30 FPS 1080p)

  • I can’t play the game because of the pattern-seeking side of it. This is not an error, this is a feature, a core mechanic. It drives me nuts, I had to rage-quit. I don’t have time for this kind of shit.
